Skills Translator

Whether you served five years or thirty, you did more than you think. Select the things you have done and we will show you the skills behind them, the words employers use and where they are valued. At the end, download a summary to keep. Built for the police, fire and rescue, and ambulance services. Coastguard and search and rescue come next.

Nothing you select is saved or sent anywhere; it all stays on your device, unless you choose to share a qualification with us.

An example of how it works

Here is one thing someone might have done in the job, and how the Skills Translator turns it into skills that employers recognise. When you select what you did below, you will see the same for everything you choose.

1. Your service

The tasks, roles and qualifications change with your service. We remember your choice on this device only.

2. Start with your role (optional)

Choosing a role selects the things people in that role usually do. Add as many roles as you held, then clear anything that does not fit.

3. Select what you did

Choose as many areas of work as apply, including roles you held alongside your main job, then select the things you did.

4. What you may already hold

Many people hold formal qualifications without realising. Select only what you have been awarded: completing training is not always the same as holding a qualification recognised outside the service, so check your certificates or training record for the exact title. If you leave after a long career with few external qualifications, your experience still counts, and the steps above show it.

It will appear in your summary. Then please press "Share with us", so we can add it to the list for everyone who comes after you. It is anonymous: we receive only the qualification you typed and the items you selected above, never your name. Please do not include personal details.

Not sure? Look for the certificate (from Pearson or Edexcel, City & Guilds, SFJ Awards, Qualsafe or a first aid provider); ask your force, service or trust Learning and Development team for your training record; check your free online Personal Learning Record, which covers most regulated qualifications since about 2010; or ask the awarding body, which can confirm and reissue a certificate for a fee.
